Are you an individual, corporate body or an NGO looking forward to obtaining a Tax ID with the Joint Revenue Tax Board?, In this guide, I will walk you through the JTB (Now JRB) TIN Online registration portal in Nigeria and how you can stay compliant with the tax authorities
2026 Update:
Nigeria has replaced the Joint Tax Board (JTB) framework with the Joint Revenue Board (JRB) following the implementation of the Joint Revenue Board Act 2025.
The Old JTB Registration process has been replaced by the new JRB Tax ID system administered through the Joint Revenue Board and Nigerian Revenue Service.
This Guide has been updates to explain both the previous system and the current application process
The tax system under the Tinubu government has witnessed a lot of changes and transformations in recent weeks. This change, coupled with the new tax policy, has raised eyebrows heading into 2026.
The tax websites have also been updated to comply with this policy. Every citizen is now expected to register with the tax authority either as an individual or a corporate body to obtain a Tax Identification Number.
The new tax regime is focused on a progressive tax system that will revolutionize tax administration and compliance.
Nigeria is a country that adopts a progressive tax system. This means, the higher your income, the higher the tax burden.
The tax regime is aimed at achieving the following;
- Encourage more people to pay tax by widening the tax net
- Identify those not staying compliant
- Punish tax evaders
- Unify the whole tax system in Nigeria to reduce multiple taxation
- Every individual, corporate body or association is mandated to register with a tax authority and obtain a Tax Identification Number.
- Harmonizing and integrating all taxes on the taxpromax online platform
However, this can not be achieved without the first approach, which is getting registered with the tax authority and obtaining a Tax ID.
The Joint Tax Board happens to be one of tax bodies in Nigeria that issues a Tax ID to businesses and individuals for the aim of fostering tax administration and collection in Nigeria.
What is JTB TIN in Nigeria (Old)?
The JTB TIN is a Tax Identification Number issued by the Joint Tax Board in Nigeria to taxpayers. In collaboration with FIRS and State Revenue Authorities, the tax ID serves as a single unique tax identifier for both Federal and State tax obligations.
Established under the provisions of Section 86(1) of the PITA, 2004, the Joint Tax Board has been a powerful arm of taxation in Nigeria, collecting and remitting state taxes to the federal government.
While FIRS focuses on collecting and remitting federal taxes, the Joint Tax Board focuses its attention and jurisdiction more on state taxes.
